I did something incredibly stupid yesterday after watching the opening ceremonies for the Olympics. I didn’t even make to the end. Got about 3.5 hours in and decided to go to bed. I figured I could watch highlights of what I missed on the CBC website.
What I had intended to be a four hour nap, turned into an ALL day nap. Yes that’s right. I slept from 9:00 am to like midnight last night. I tried going to bed around 2 am, and snoozed. I’ve been at it since 5 am this morning and am ready to start my day. I’m actually feeling pretty good right now.
It’s 6:30 am, the sun is shining. There is a breeze coming in from outside and it’s supposed to be a nice day. The rain on Friday night really helped to clean up that smoke and I can breathe easy today. I am drinking my morning coffee and am planning a visit with my dad later this morning.
I was originally going to head over for the afternoon but you know what? Screw that. Time to change things up. I’ll head over after 9:00 when he’s done his breakfast. Stay until he’s done lunch and tuck him in for a nap – if he’s having a good day. I normally see him on Friday’s but my sister wanted to switch days. I’m looking forward to spending some quality time with him. Maybe we’ll go for a short walk if he’s up to it.
I love these early mornings. The world around me is quiet. Rush hour traffic doesn’t get going until about 7:00 am. Traffic on the road outside is pretty steady most of the day. It does quiet down around 10 at night which surprised me. At least it’s mostly quiet for those few hours I am sleeping.
Today I need to get groceries. I’m debating on whether to get it delivered or stop by on my way home. I used up most of the veggies in my freezer and the meat too. So, I need to stock up on that. And soup – so I can make casseroles again. I love casseroles and soups.
This time of year – is my favorite time of year. Our autumn starts in August and I think we’ll get an early start this year. The days are already shorter with it getting dark around 9 in the evening. The sunsets are brilliant this time of year too with stunning colors.
I just adore fall for all kinds of reasons. The air is fresh in the morning. The temperature doesn’t get above 30C. Or above 25C. The nights are cool enough to sleep comfortably and you might even need a blanket. I can breathe easily in my condo. I even had the fireplace on yesterday morning while watching the opening ceremonies. It felt good to do that again.
But the best part about fall – isn’t that you can wear sweaters again or the cooler weather. And it’s not just about the beautiful sunsets or colors in the river valley.
Nope. It’s more than that.
It’s about fall cooking!
Fall vegetables are already out on the shelves and I can’t wait to start making stews, soups and hot casseroles again. That’s the best part of the season! I’m stocking up on canned goods and creamy soups. I’ll be getting back into spaghetti squash and zucchini casseroles. Zuccinis are a great substitute for pasta.
I think I might even put together a cook book for fall recipes.
August is just a week away which hard to believe. The year has moved quickly. I’ve already been living here for almost FIVE months! That’s hard to believe. I love it here. Soon I’ll be able to get into the gym and go for walks again. The smoke put a bit of a damper on those plans.
But today, my dear readers is going to be a great day.
