Yep. We’re back here again and I’m working on fitness goals for the summer. The heatwave has really made it hard to exercise or go for walks. I’ve mostly spent the week lying next to fans, cursing my life that I can’t afford air conditioning, and contemplating how on earth I was going to lose weight if the heat continued like this.
The last couple of days, after literally sweating buckets, I actually dropped a couple of pounds. This got me motivated to go through my fridge and start eating the fresh food. I have bad habits of letting food go off. My goal for food is to get better at this. I’m going through my cupboards, checking dates on cans and dried goods. As temperatures cool off tomorrow and early next week – I really hope to get some batch cooking done. I need to clean out my freezer to make room. I’m tempted to buy a standing freezer to store in my laundry room. But these are not cheap. Decisions, decisions.
I got some exercise early this morning before the heat came on. I was sitting outside drinking my coffee at 9:00 am and decided to finally clean the siding. The last tenants never cleaned them. There was SO much dirt when I moved in. I had cleaned them when I first moved in. And finally got them clean today. It looks really good. I was sweating by the end of it. I have to go back and do a second coat of cleaning with bleach tomorrow – I’m short and can’t reach the really high siding. Then I got to laundry, changed the bedding and tidied up the bedroom. All I have left to do tomorrow is the bathrooms and vacuuming. It felt really good to get things done.
I have this strong feeling that something BIG is coming our way. Whether it be a natural disaster – I mean, all you have to do is watch the news. There are disasters every day. But something tells me to keep my cupboards stocked up with healthy food. Have plenty of water on hand. And have all those “necessities” for survival. I’m not saying the end of the world is coming – but something feels….off. Doesn’t hurt to be prepared, right?
Anyway… maybe I need to lay off of the TikTok conspiracy channels.
Here are my fitness goals for July-August 2021 – I never focus on weight loss – it’s more about exercise and eating healthy. I’m placing my grocery order right now and stocking up on stuff like beans, tortilla wraps, fresh vegetables, broth and other canned goods. I also plan on going through my pantry this week and “rotate” all the items so I have a better idea of what I have on hand. I have a bad habit of just throwing packages of stuff into the cupboard and they are forgotten about for months.
Go for weekly walks – when weather is good for it. At least 3 times a week in the evening. I’d like to get my camera out and go for walks with friends too. As a social thing. I’d also like to explore the area more and see some of the local nature trails. There are lots of parks I can wander around too.
Be more social – now that things are opened up again this is easier. I saw my dad on Friday, and am back to volunteering three times a month at the church. That will be cut back to twice a month in the fall. I just need a break from it. I’d like to have weekends to enjoy other things – or maybe go to a party on Saturday night and stay up really late like my friends and family do – without feeling like crap on Sunday morning.
Start going to the gym – the gym in our building has opened up again. On hot days, I might walk over there- if they have air conditioning. I’ll use it more in the fall and winter. It’s only a block away. I have to book time to use it so that is a bit of a pain. At least I have the option again and — IT IS FREE! I just need to get some cheap workout clothes from Walmart. All my pj pants have holes in the arse lol.
Food goals for healthy gut and weight loss:
Eat more natural foods and reduce gluten intake – I’m trying to reduce my gluten intake. I don’t have intolerances, but I’m trying to cut down on breads. The only pasta I eat is smart pasta and that’s a once in a while thing. I’m trying to get more into things like riced cauliflower, lettuce wraps, and experiment with different salads. I find it hard to cook in summer months, so I’m looking for recipes that I can cook in my Instant Zest Pot. That includes chilis, soups, anything with rice or other grains.
Eat more fish, poultry and lean protein – what does that mean? It means cooking more with salmon, tuna, and basa. I’ve tried to cut back on my fish intake because of the problems with over fishing in our oceans. But honestly, fish is really healthy to eat – in moderate doses. You don’t want to eat too much fish because of magnesium. But I aim for at least a few times a month to indulge in things like salmon. Fish and chicken are really expensive right now. Food in general isn’t cheap – but every now and then, you just need to treat yourself.
The great thing about salmon or basa fillets is that they go well with just about anything. You can fry them up and eat them on its own, or add them to salads, pastas, sandwiches and casseroles. Other types of great protein sources that are cheap include eggs, and peanut butter.
Other foods that are good for weight loss include grains (oats, oatmeal, brown rice), nuts, produce (fresh vegetables and fruit), dark leafy greens like kale and spinach, beans. I’ll do a separate post on super foods for weight loss too.
I’ve been stuck on a food rut and hoping these changes will help with that.
Anyway, I think that’s a good start for summer goals. I’m determined to make this work. I’m tired of “dying” in the summer on hot days. I’m tired of getting winded after walking a block. And I’m tired of the knee pain and struggles to find nice clothes that fit and look good.
And so, here we are. Starting all over again on this never ending journey.
