5 activities to keep you entertained on rainy days while in isolation

April was a really dry month here in my city. Normally, April is our rainy season but as we’ve seen with weather changes, our weather has become rather unpredictable. We had one good rain storm in April, followed by a weekend of snow. And now it seems we’ve finally entered our rainy season on the first weekend of May.

Weather here in Alberta can be so vast from summer to summer. Even from city to city. We’ve had really hot and humid summers to really rainy summers where it seems to rain every weekend. Or any day you make plans to go outside – am I right?

So, I thought today, as it’s pouring again outside, I would come up with a list of activities you can do to keep yourself busy while in isolation on these dark and rainy days.

I actually love the rain in summer months. But during rainy season, especially if you live in cities like Vancouver, it can get to you after a while.

We are in another “lockdown” here in Alberta with a third wave of the pandemic and a lot of people are struggling with their mental health. Now that it’s rainy season, it can be even harder to force yourself to get out of bed in the morning. I know I’m not alone in this.

Here are some activities you can do FOR FREE while at home, in isolation on those cold rainy days.

Be creative – work with your hands.

On these days, it’s easy to be tempted to stay in bed and do nothing all day. But I like to keep productive. I’ll spend time at the piano recording music, or get out my ink set and work on some art. Or I might spend time researching new topics for blog articles like this one. I find being creative, not only keeps the hands busy, but also helps with depression that might come with the rain.

If you don’t have a creative outlet, then now is the time to try something new! Pick up an instrument and head over to YouTube for tutorials, or buy some puzzles, play some games – find that thing that you enjoy doing.

Spring cleaning – reorganize your home

Decluttering is something I’m determined to do this summer. It’s easier to do in my new home. So, on days like this, I love to just spend an hour or two cleaning. Whether it’s vacuuming the floors, washing the mirrors or just going through some paperwork – this is a great way to kill some time, get some exercise and organize your home. I find it easier to relax when things are organized and I can find things easily. Especially in the kitchen – having all your cooking utensils and supplies within reach of your oven, helps to cut down on cooking time.

Home exercise

Contrary to popular belief, you can get a great workout from your very own living room or bedroom without ever stepping into a gym. Of course this really depends on your overall fitness goals. But if you need a boost of energy, try doing some home fitness.

I have a home gym that cost less than $100 to set up. Really! I use an exercise ball for pilates and leg days, a set of dumbbells for weights, a kettle bell, resistance bands and of course, YouTube videos for workouts like cardio routines, Tae Bo, Yoga, and all kinds of fun things to try.

All you need is 20-30 minutes of exercise or HIIT training to give you that much needed energy boost. Have a hot shower after and treat yourself to a good meal.

Watch party with friends

Is there a new movie you’ve been wanting to check out? Or perhaps you’re binge watching a show, well now you can schedule watch parties with your friends online on services like Facebook. Make a date of it. Pop some popcorn. Have a glass of wine or two. Invite all your gal pals or guy friends and watch the latest movie on Netflix. Or have a total 80’s rewind night and binge all the “rat pack” movies.

On Twitter, there’s a local group that started a movie club. They all watch the same movie on the same night and then gather on Twitter to chat about it. I’ve yet to participate, but it’s on my to do list. It looks super fun!

You could also do this with game nights and play online games on Twitch, or other streaming services with friends. I even got into Minecraft out of boredom a couple of years ago and have a lot of fun with it.

Write a book

If you love to write, then why not get started on your own E-Book. It’s really easy to do if you love to write. All you need is MS Word or a similar program if you’re on a Mac program. There are lots of sites online that you can use for writing. You can even design your own book covers using free services like Canva.com.

Pick a topic you really enjoy and know a lot about and just start writing! That’s what led me to start this blog. And I’ve met so many great people from around the globe because of it!

These are just a few suggestions to help you keep busy on those rainy or cold days when you don’t feel like going outside. And of course, there’s nothing wrong with curling up in bed with a good book or your favorite show on Netflix.

Just remember, that being alone in isolation doesn’t have to be boring. The busier you keep yourself, the faster time will fly.

    Absolutely – it’s hard to get motivated on rainy days. We need the rain but not all weekend lol.
