Halloween Marathon movie recommendations

on

I haven’t posted much this week because I started my annual Halloween horror movie marathon early. Like three weeks ago to be honest – but I really buckled down and watched a lot of movies I’ve been meaning to watch.

I always save the best movies for Halloween weekend. I should have posted this yesterday – but time slipped away from me as I really was enjoying myself.

What movies do I recommend for tonight you might ask?

Hocus Pocus

This movie is cheesy and hilarious. Starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, this family friend movie is one I save for Halloween night. It has just about everything you could ask for – witches with warts, cauldrons, and cute boys.

The story revolves around 300 year old witches who prey on children for eternal youth. This movie is right up there with Princess Bride if you liked that movie.

And my favorite line: “There’s not enough children in the world to make you look beautiful!”

The Burbs

This is one of my all time favorite 80’s movies. I love Tom Hanks. The whole ensemble is great and includes a young Corey Feldman (Stand By Me, The Lost Boys), and the late Carrie Fisher. To name a few of the main cast.

Hanks is a young suburbanite who has been ordered to stay home from work due to stress from his job. His quirky neighbours have him convinced that the new family on the block are members of a cult and worship Satan.

This movie is just fun all around and it’s great to see Carrie Fisher in this role along side with Hanks.

Gremlins

Yes, I’m including the Gremlins in with my Halloween list. I watched it last night for the first time in years and I had a smile on my face the whole time. Plus Gizmo, is just adorable. This is another movie with young Corey Feldman who was an iconic teen star of the 80’s.

Also starring in this movie are Phoebe Cates, Zach Galligan as Billy and Hoyt Axton as Billy Peltzer’s father who is a salesman and small time inventor who travels from city to city in search of the next big invention who discovers a small creature that he calls Gizmo on one of his trips.

But Gizmo comes with rules and great responsibility. What happens if you feed these creatures after midnight? You’ll have to watch the movie to find out.

Gremlins is another 80’s movie and was labelled as a horror/comedy – while some parts can be seen as scary – this is a movie the whole family can enjoy.

Beetlejuice

This is one of my all time favorite movies – of all time. It starts Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder and the hilarious Catherine O’Hara (Schitts Creek). Most everyone has heard of this movie or has seen it by now.

So, I’ll just leave you with this clip that introduces Beetlejuice to the new homeowners who have moved in.

The Monster Squad

Another great movie from the 80’s. While this movie wasn’t a huge hit like The Burbs or Beetlejuice, it’s a lesser known movie that’s just fun all around. The movie stars Andrew Gower, Stephen Macht, Tom Noonan and many more actors (that I’ve never really seen in anything else).

A group of kids discover that monsters are real and are hunted by Dracula who plans to rule the world. Dracula seeks help from other monsters to carry out his plans. I can’t tell you much more than that – otherwise it will spoil the movie for you!

Best line: “Wolfman has nards”

What’s on your movie list for the weekend? I’ve been binge watching horror movies for the last few weeks and save the fun and hilarious movies for Halloween night. It brings back so many memories of Halloweens as a kid.

My mum loved decorating the house and handing out candy. She would often play spooky sounds from the stereo. Some years we even had haunted houses for the neighbours.

But with the pandemic, I decided to stay home tonight – order in some pizza and watch some favorite movies. I even hooked up my pc to my tv for the full experience.

If you’re looking for scary movies to watch tonight here are some other movies in my collection.

  • Arachnophobia
  • Death Becomes Her (Bruce Willis)
  • Eight Legged Freaks
  • Fright Night
  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers
  • Little Shop of Horrors
  • Practical Magic
  • The Craft
  • The Fly
  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show
  • Witches of Eastwick

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Stay safe whatever you decide to do tonight.
