Living Well: why are you so moody in the morning?

Have you ever started off your day with a foul mood? Today is one of those days. I’m not sure why. I went to bed before midnight last night after getting a bit of a dizzy spell.

I’m noticing more that if I’m playing a video game at night time I sometimes get really dizzy – it could be a migraine thing. Or it could be because I didn’t get much sleep the night before.

So, I turned off the computer and crawled into bed.

And here I am, at 8:30 in the morning, and for no reason – I am in a bad mood. I’m annoyed at my neighbours outside already. I’m annoyed I had to chat with WordPress about a renewal fee that I’ve already paid for.

I’m annoyed that I even have to get out of bed today. But I’m really trying to get back to a regular schedule.

So, what’s wrong with me? Why do we find ourselves in a bad mood for no apparent reason? It’s not hormones. I’ve already passed the time of the “monthly’s” – so what gives?

Let’s head on over to Dr. Google and see what this could be about.

But there are many reasons why you might be in a bad mood, these are just some things that can affect my moods in the morning.

Hey, great! That means I’m not alone in this. Here are some reasons you too, might be “moody” when you first wake up:

Not eating enough

Low blood sugars can result in a bad mood or feeling tired and lethargic. I suspect that may be the case here. I usually eat breakfast the moment I sit down at my computer.

While some experts suggest that eating before bed may help with low blood sugar levels – others advise not to consume sugar before you count sheep for the night.

Not drinking enough water can make anyone feel groggy and lethargic – especially on hot and humid summer days. I already wrote an article on the effects humidity can have on your body – with helpful hints on how to keep cool.

But the most important thing to try to remember is to drink enough water throughout the day. Experts suggest to aim for at least 8 glasses of water. I keep a 2 litre jug near my computer so I’m constantly reaching for my water during the day.

To spice things up, I’ll add some Crystal Light mix to the jug. I also use a Brita filter jug to help improve the bland taste of my tap water.

Not getting enough sleep

This is a no brainer. This is usually why I’m cranky in the morning. If my sleep is suddenly interrupted or I toss and turn most of the night – I often wake up with a headache the next morning. And a headache is reason enough to be cranky.

Eating a healthy diet

Experts say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Skipping breakfast can often lead to feeling tired or “groggy” throughout the day. This can also impact your mood.

Eating a well rounded and balanced diet – 2-3 meals during the day – can help to keep you energy up and your moods elevated.

Making sure you are eating enough as well – never going lower than 1200 calories daily (for women) is extremely important.

Vitamins and Nutrients

Sometimes eating healthy isn’t enough and we need extra help for a mood pick-me-up. Being low in essential vitamins and nutrients like Vitamin C, D, and even iron, can cause a mood shift.

If your morning moody-ness doesn’t go away after a few weeks, you may want to consult with your doctor and go for some lab work.

Most vitamin deficiencies can be sorted out by taking over the counter supplements. But do check with your doctor first.

Magnesium is one that people often forget to include in their daily vitamin regime.

Getting enough exercise is important. I know for me, I skipped out yesterday on my daily exercise routine. I always seem to feel better after a good and energized workout. I feel pumped up about what I’ve accomplished and it puts me in a better mood overall.

Going for a walk outside also helps. That natural vitamin D is so important for our mental health and well-being.

Mental Health

Depression and anxiety can also play a role in how you feel when you wake up in the morning. You may have anxieties that you didn’t even know you had. Whether you’re coping with difficult people in the workplace, or your relationship is struggling, or you’re facing financial difficulties – know that you are not alone.

The best thing I can advise about struggling with depression or anxiety is to talk to someone about it. Talk to your doctor or medical team. Talk to a counselor. Talk to a teacher. A friend. A family member you trust.

It may take some time and digging into your past to discover why anxiety is bringing you down – but let me tell you. It’s worth it. Talking about your fears and facing them head on – that can help boost up your mood.

I hope this article helps to make your mornings a little better. I’m sipping my morning coffee and just ate some breakfast – already my mood is starting to improve. Your overall diet and exercise routine has such a tremendous impact on your overall health. It’s really important that we care for our bodies and take great care of our mental health – especially during these fragile times.
