Fitness challenge: the coffee experiment

The past few days I’ve been experimenting with cutting coffee out of my diet. Not completely. Because – coffee. But as my weight continues to increase, my energy levels continue to dwindle and it seems like everything else is going to shit – I thought it was time to make some major changes in my life.

I have not been well the past few months. As you know, I’ve recently discovered I have asthma. I’m experiencing a lot of issues with a bad cough, chest tightness, dry eyes and dry mouth and repeat infections. My medical team and I are still trying to determine the cause of this and sudden change in symptoms. I’m sick on a weekly basis. I’m actually going to start using this blog as a diary/journal to keep track of it and to share information along the way. My medical team, which is truly amazing – is working with me to find out what’s going on.

The purpose of the coffee experiment

In an effort to claim back my health, I need to make some major lifestyle changes. This means working out more. Eating healthy. Cutting out the carbs that I love ever so much like bread and pastries. Those damn Cinnabons. Drinking more water. And getting a solid six to seven hours of sleep every night. Sounds easy enough? Right? That’s what I tell myself.

I’ve been experiencing dry mouth with my meds and sinus infections. It makes me more thirsty and coffee just makes the dry mouth that much – worse. And thus began the coffee experiment.

Since Monday, I think I’ve had four cups of coffee, Has it changed anything? I can’t tell. But I find in just a few days my craving for coffee has lessened. And as I walked to the coffee pot this morning to brew a fresh pot of Tim Horton’s coffee, I shrugged my shoulders and opted for a cool glass of orange juice instead. But I’m craving water more than anything these days. Buckets of it. I don’t plan on cutting coffee out of my diet all together. I just want to get to the point where I don’t have to rely on it every morning to get going.

Here is what my week has looked like:

Sunday – two cups of small coffee in the morning. I had a nap Sunday afternoon, and felt groggy the rest of the day.

Monday – no coffee, no nap – I actually had an amazing day and got a lot accomplished around my home.

Tuesday – two cups – I dragged my feet all day. I had a healthy salad for lunch and hopped on the bike for an hour that night.

Wednesday – no coffee – I felt pretty good and experienced zero withdrawal symptoms or cravings. Energy was zero – so no exercise. The weather was also cold and the days are getting shorter.

Thursday – I woke up feeling stressed with a knot in my stomach. I was stuffy. The last thing I wanted was a cup of coffee. I opted for water instead. I needed a clear head. By noon, my eyes were watering, I started coughing. The tightness in my chest return. I felt good for a few hours. And then came home – and well. I’ll spare you the details. No caffeine cravings.

Friday – still no coffee. That’s day three. I have a little bit of a headache. I’m coughing a lot from the asthma. I’m not overly hungry but had a healthy breakfast that involved fruit. I love my fruit. And for a drink, I opted for orange juice. I’m craving more and more water. I’ll hit the Brita filter next. A tall glass of iced water sounds divine.

The purpose of the experiment

Long term effects of cutting back on caffeine? I know there are plenty. From sleeping better, to having more energy and less cravings – also the weight loss. I don’t drink a lot of coffee – usually 1 to 2 cups a day. Not like my ex who used to inhale the stuff like drugs. I’ll let you know how the rest of the month goes.

It’s also worth to note that since I changed my bedding (comforter, sheets, ripped off the dust cover), and cleaned the ceiling fan, I’m sleeping a good solid six hours each night. Like clockwork, I wake up at 7:00 am to pee. It might be my natural clock telling me it’s time to get out of bed. It’s a step in the right direction to getting healthy.

Back to the basics – natural food

My diet hasn’t been too bad this week. Because of health issues, I’ve haven’t felt like eating. Asthma causes this tight feeling in your chest. And then it goes to the pit of your stomach. When that happens, I don’t feel like eating. At work, I tried to keep healthy snacking on fruits and vegetables. I don’t remember the last time I had bread this week. Maybe Sunday? Monday? My fridge is stocked up with healthy choices. And salads. Those deli salads are really a life saver.

Okay, well after all this talk of coffee. I’m kind of wanting coffee.

Damn you brain. Must you constantly undermine me.

Okay. No. The room is starting to spin again. I’m going back to bed.
