Saturdays are my favorite day of the week.
For one, it’s the only day that I can sleep in past nine am. Although lately, I find that I can’t sleep in past seven or eight. That is partially due to my noisy neighbours upstairs who are early risers.
I tried ear plugs for a long time but then I kept getting ear infections. I had to stop. I’m paranoid that if I use a sleep mask or something that I will miss my alarm in the morning for work. I work at 9 every day. But I first start waking up at six am. Then seven thirty. Then every ten minutes after that.
I probably should just start getting up at 7:30. But I am not a morning person. I’m the type of person that wakes up thirty minutes before I have to leave and then I’m running around trying to decide what to wear that day and what to pack for lunch. Lunch often is forgotten in my fridge. Can anyone else relate to this as a single person?
I miss the days that my mum used to make us all sandwiches for lunch and put little love notes in our brown paper bags. Such fond memories. She carried on the tradition with for my dad and brother. But once I got old enough – I was left to my own devices. Sigh.
I’m thinking of my mother a lot this weekend. But I’ve already written about her so much in this blog already. And I’ve already written an Easter tribute. So what to write about today? Random nonsense again, okay!
Why I love my Saturdays.
It rained last night. It’s spring here in Alberta. And despite my allergies, I love the rain.
My condo building is old, wooden and can often get a rusty smell. But it’s large. I live in a two bedroom condo with a fully equipped kitchen, laundry room and balcony. Storage is plenty. My second room is serving as an office/storage room. I even have a storage room on the balcony for all my outdoor goods. I really should check on it. I haven’t been out there in months.
I usually leave my balcony door open at night time while I sleep. It helps to cool down the condo and makes it smell fresh. Nothing quite beats the smell of rain in the morning. This chilly spring weather reminds me of being in the mountains. Which is one of favorite things to do.
The first thing I do when I get up is put on a pot of coffee. I’m drinking McCafe these days, switching from my regular Folgers. Sometimes you need to do that. Just switch things up.
Breakfast ranges from cereal, to toast and jam or peanut butter. Today it’s left overs. I went to a party yesterday and I brought left overs home. My fridge is full of food which is rare for me. Now I actually have to cook and stuff. So today’s breakfast, is two mini bagels and some fruit.
I love fruit. Strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, mangoes, grapes and oranges. As a single person, I tend to opt for pre-cut fruit. I hit the deli first and buy all pre-made salads and fruit trays.
Yes, it’s more expensive than if I were to buy food that I could cut myself. But the thing is – by the time I get home from work every day, the last thing I want to do is spend two hours in the kitchen. Even though I love cooking. It seems like a chore for just one person.
So, pre-prepped healthy foods for me it is. Sometimes I will opt for a bowl of cereal and yogurt. That’s when I’m feeling especially lazy. Things like sliced cheese, sliced bread – all great for a single person who doesn’t have a lot of free time.
When my coffee is ready and I hear the beep of the machine, I pour my first cup of coffee and walk over to my computer. And that’s where I spend most of my Saturday mornings.
Sipping coffee, while listening to a YouTube tutorial or Spotify playlist. It depends on the mood. Right now I’m listening to the hum of my dishwasher. I’m behind on my weekly chores. Saturdays are my day to catch up on all the housework. It usually takes an hour in the afternoon. Laundry is taken care of while writing. When the dryer buzzes – that’s my cue to take a break.
Saturdays are my days where I can work on whatever project I have on the go. Building websites, writing a few chapters of my book, working on this blog, or doing all the things I think about during the week. It’s my most productive day of the week. I wish I had more Saturdays.
Wouldn’t it be great if every day could be Saturday?
For the last six months, Saturday evenings have been spent with my dad watching the hockey games. But I saw him last night and gave him a surprise visit after the party. So tonight, after my afternoon errands, I can come back home and relax. Maybe work on a video or two. Or maybe catch up on some new movies.
I can’t wait for End Game. Although I’m still getting over the losses of Infinity War. I know I’ll be bawling through this movie.
NO SPOILERS PLEASE!!!!!
Being single isn’t always bad. I’ve found things to do to fill up my time. When you work full time – the week days tend to go by quickly. Evenings are often spent at home working on something on the computer. Now that the weather is nicer, I’m hoping to get outside and actually go for walks. I’m thinking of cutting back to part time hours if I can at work. Then I have more time to work on projects or travel more.
I used to really enjoy hiking. Traveling to the mountains on my own. Getting lost in the middle of the woods. I would hike with my old backpack and my ipod. I loved it. It was my ME time.
My friends were always worried that I would get really lost or really hurt on a hike. It wasn’t until my last hike that my knee popped. It’s taken a long time to recover from that. Like, five years long. Now that I’m older it’s harder to take the weight off and get into shape for hiking. But I’m getting there – slowly.

Traveling for one – does sometimes suck. That’s the only time I miss having a partner. But at the same time – I’ve had some great trips on my own and met some life-long friends while visiting the mountains. One friend is from Germany and every few years we try to meet up together. Our last meet up was in Halifax and we shared some Irish beer while listening to a Celtic band.
Well, look at that. I hit my daily 1,000 word count. The coffee maker buzzed a while ago. Nothing beats that first cup of java in the morning. I love the smell of fresh coffee in the morning.
Time to put up my feet, grab a little a java, and enjoy some tunes.
Happy Saturday everyone. Aren’t weekends the best?
